Together, no child will go hungry

A Fresh Start: Fighting Childhood Hunger Together in 2026

Welcoming the New Year with Hope and Purpose

As we step into January 2026, the spirit of new beginnings fills the air. For many, the New Year is a time to set intentions, embrace positive change, and reflect on the impact we can make in our communities. At Food Backpack for Kids (FBFK), our mission remains steadfast: to ensure that no child in Florence and Mapleton, Oregon, goes hungry. Thanks to your unwavering support and the dedication of over 40 volunteers, we now serve over 130 children every week during the school year—providing them with the nourishment they need to thrive.

Reflecting on 2025: Achievements and Community Impact

2025 was a year of challenges, resilience, and remarkable community spirit. With nearly 1 in 3 children in Oregon struggling with hunger, the need for our services was more urgent than ever. Through our school-based programs, FBFK:

  • Delivered weekend meal packs to students in need, at no charge
  • Partnered with local donors and businesses to secure food and resources
  • Maintained a discreet, respectful distribution process to protect children’s dignity

The Power of Community: Volunteers and Donors Make the Difference

Our all-volunteer staff is the heart of FBFK. Every week, over 40 caring individuals donate their time to sort, pack, and deliver food to children across rural coastal Lane County. Their commitment ensures that our program continues to run smoothly and efficiently.

Donors—individuals, families, and local businesses—are equally vital. Their generosity fuels our mission and enables us to purchase healthy, kid-friendly foods to supplement donations. Please note: FBFK does not accept food drive food, but community members are encouraged to organize donation drives to support our work. Together, we’re building a stronger, more compassionate community.

Looking Ahead: Meeting Winter Needs and Setting New Goals

Winter brings unique challenges for families facing food insecurity. While FBFK does not usually provide food during school breaks, our focus intensifies when school is in session—ensuring that every child returns to class nourished and ready to learn. As we enter 2026, our goals include:

  • Expanding outreach to identify and support more children in need
  • Encouraging more community-led donation drives
  • Strengthening partnerships with local organizations and schools

We invite you to make FBFK part of your New Year’s resolution—whether by volunteering, donating, or spreading the word about our mission. Together, we can make a lasting difference.
