Introduction:
November is a month of gratitude, reflection, and awareness. It’s a time to acknowledge the blessings we have, while also shining a light on the critical issues that affect our communities. One of these pressing concerns is childhood hunger, which is why November is recognized as Hunger Awareness Month.
At Food Backpack for Kids, we’re committed to upholding our mission to provide food bags to hungry school children in rural western Lane County, Oregon. Our program is dedicated to supporting these young students, ensuring they have access to nutritious food over the weekends, when school meals are not available.
The Reality of Childhood Hunger
Childhood hunger is a pervasive issue in the United States, affecting 1 in 5 children. In rural areas like western Lane County, the problem is exacerbated by limited access to resources, transportation, and services. Hunger can have devastating consequences on a child’s physical and mental health, academic performance, and overall well-being.
Understanding Hunger Awareness Month
Hunger Awareness Month was established to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in the United States. It’s an opportunity for individuals, organizations, and communities to come together to educate, advocate, and take action against hunger. The month-long campaign aims to:
- Raise awareness about the reality of hunger in America
- Educate people about the consequences of hunger on individuals, families, and communities
- Inspire individuals to take action and make a difference in their communities
Our Mission: Providing Hope and Nourishment
At Food Backpack for Kids, we’re passionate about providing hope and nourishment to rural Lane County students in need. Our program is built on the understanding that every child deserves access to healthy food, regardless of their family’s circumstances. By providing food backpacks every weekend, we’re helping to:
- Bridge the nutritional gap for students who rely on school meals during the week
- Support academic performance, attendance, and overall well-being
- Foster a sense of security, comfort, and dignity for these young students
