As we step into January, we recognize National Poverty in America Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shedding light on the pervasive issue of poverty and its impact on communities across the nation. One of the most pressing concerns linked to poverty is child hunger, a challenge that affects millions of children in the United States.

Understanding National Poverty in America Awareness Month

National Poverty in America Awareness Month serves as a crucial reminder of the struggles faced by families living in poverty. It aims to raise awareness about the economic hardships that prevent many from accessing basic necessities, including nutritious food. This month is an opportunity to reflect on the broader impact of poverty and to mobilize efforts to support those in need.

The Reality of Child Hunger in America

Child hunger remains a significant issue in the U.S., with many children lacking consistent access to the food they need to thrive. In rural areas, such as Rural Western Lane County, the challenges are even more pronounced. Families in these communities often face barriers to accessing food, exacerbating the issue of food insecurity among children.

Food Backpack for Kids: Our Mission and Impact

At Food Backpack for Kids, we are committed to ensuring that no child goes hungry. Our organization, based in Florence, Oregon, focuses on feeding food-insecure children in the rural areas of Florence and Mapleton. Through our Kid-Friendly School-based Program, we provide assistance to over 100 kids each week, during the school year, ensuring they have access to nutritious meals over the weekends.

Our efforts are powered by the dedication of more than 40 volunteers who contribute their time each week. With their support, we run a school year food drive and distribution initiative, purchasing, packaging, and discreetly distributing food to children in need.  Our volunteers work year round to make sure the children have the necessary food they need.

How You Can Help

Local donations are the foundation of our organization, enabling us to continue our mission of combating child hunger. We encourage you to get involved by donating, volunteering, or spreading awareness about our cause. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a significant difference in the lives of children in our community.

Conclusion

Addressing child hunger and poverty requires collective action and community support. As we observe National Poverty in America Awareness Month, let us come together to make a positive impact. Join us in our mission to ensure that every child has access to the food they need to grow and succeed.
