The Urgency of Child Hunger in Oregon
In Oregon, nearly one in three children faces food insecurity—a sobering reality that impacts families right here in Florence and Mapleton. For these children, the end of the school week can mean the beginning of a long stretch without reliable meals. Food Backpack for Kids, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Florence, Oregon, is dedicated to changing that story. Our mission is simple but urgent: ensure that no child in our community goes hungry, especially over the weekends when school meals aren’t available.

Our Program: Nourishing Children, Empowering Futures
Each week during the school year, Food Backpack for Kids provides weekend meal backpacks to over 130 children in the rural Coastal Lane County area. These backpacks are filled with nutritious, easy-to-prepare foods—breakfast items, fruits, juices, and protein-rich snacks—designed to support children’s growth, energy, and overall well-being. All food is chosen with kids in mind, ensuring meals are both healthy and appealing.
Our discreet distribution method is a cornerstone of the program. We understand the importance of dignity, so food is delivered in a way that protects students’ privacy. This approach not only addresses hunger but also helps children feel cared for and included, not singled out.
Powered by Volunteers and Community Spirit
Food Backpack for Kids is entirely volunteer-run, with more than 40 community members giving their time each week to purchase, pack, and distribute food. Their dedication is the heart of our organization. Volunteers often say that the most rewarding part of their work is knowing they’re helping local children start each week ready to learn and thrive.
But our volunteers aren’t alone. Local businesses, churches, and donors play a vital role by providing resources and financial support. Every dollar donated goes directly to food purchases, thanks to our all-volunteer staff and strong community partnerships that help cover operational costs.
Real Stories, Real Impact
The impact of our program goes beyond the food itself. Teachers have shared stories of students who arrive at school on Monday more focused and engaged because they haven’t spent the weekend hungry. Parents have expressed relief, knowing their children have reliable meals even during tough times. And for many families, Food Backpack for Kids represents more than a meal—it’s a symbol of hope and support from their neighbors.
Why Weekend Nutrition Matters
Research shows that hunger doesn’t just affect a child’s body; it impacts their ability to learn, socialize, and grow. Children who are well-nourished are more likely to attend school regularly, participate in class, and reach their academic potential. By bridging the weekend meal gap, we help break the cycle of food insecurity and give every child a fair chance at success.
