National Snack Food Month
February is National Snack Food Month, a time when many of us celebrate the joy and convenience of snacks. However, for millions of children in the U.S., access to even a simple snack is a daily struggle. At Food Backpack for Kids, we see this struggle firsthand in Florence and Mapleton, Oregon, where nearly one in three children face hunger. This month, we invite you to join us in turning awareness into action.
The Reality of Childhood Hunger
While many enjoy the abundance of snack choices, a significant portion of American children experience food insecurity. In 2022, 17% of households with children—representing 13.4 million kids—faced food insecurity. This means these children sometimes lacked consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. The consequences are far-reaching, impacting health, education, and overall well-being.

Bridging the Weekend Hunger Gap
Food Backpack for Kids addresses the “weekend hunger gap” by providing essential food supplies to over 131 at-risk students during the school year. Our all-volunteer team ensures that children in Florence and Mapleton have access to nutritious meals even when school is not in session. This effort is crucial in supporting their health and academic success.
National Snack Food Month: A Time for Action
This National Snack Food Month, we urge you to reflect on the disparity between those who enjoy abundant snacks and those who struggle to access basic nutrition.
