School’s Back! Food Backpack for Kids Gearing Up to Feed Hungry Students

The start of a new school year fills the air with excitement and anticipation. But for many local children, the transition from summer to fall brings an unfortunate reality – weekends without enough food.

As classes resume on August 5th in Florence, the volunteers at Food Backpack for Kids haven’t taken any breaks. Our team has been working tirelessly to prepare for another year of providing weekend meal assistance to food-insecure students in the Florence and Mapleton areas.

All summer long, our crew has sourced and purchased high-quality, shelf-stable foods from local grocers and suppliers. Nutritious items that are ready to eat and to provide a nutritious and filling food source for over 110 children, every school year weekend.

Each week, our assembly lines fire up as volunteers gather to pack bags full of enough kid-friendly, nonperishable foods to get students through the 68-hour gap between the lunch they receive at school on Friday and the  breakfast on Monday morning. These bags aren’t just stopgaps – they contain well-balanced meals formulated by nutritionists to fuel young minds and bodies.

As the costs of groceries continue rapidly escalating, organizations like ours are feeling the squeeze. It’s taking more monetary donations than ever before to purchase the same amount of food for kids in need. That’s why community support is so vital for the ongoing sustainability of our program.

100% of every dollar donated to Food Backpack for Kids directly pays for the food items inside the bags we deliver to schools each week. Our lean operational model is driven entirely by passionate community volunteers who give their time and energy. Not a single donated penny gets siphoned away to overhead or administrative costs.

With your generosity, we can continue our mission of fighting childhood hunger and giving all local students a fair chance at health and academic success. When basic needs are met, kids are free to focus on learning, growing, and achieving their full potential.
