April is National Volunteer Month, a time to recognize the people who give their time, energy, and heart to help children in our community. At Food Backpack for Kids, volunteers are a vital part of everything we do. Their dedication helps us serve more than 130 children each week during the school year in Florence, Mapleton, and across rural coastal Lane County.

How Volunteers Help Feed More Than 130 Children Each Week
Behind every packed bag of food is a team of caring people working together. Volunteers help with the many hands-on tasks that make our program possible, from organizing supplies to packing kid-friendly food and preparing it for distribution. Their time and effort help ensure children receive food discreetly and reliably through our school-based program.
Because Food Backpack for Kids is powered by volunteers, community support
stretches further. Every hour given helps us stay focused on our mission: making sure no child goes hungry.
Why Volunteer Support Matters in Small Rural Communities
In small rural communities, neighbors often step up to help neighbors. That spirit of
care is especially important when it comes to feeding children. Resources can be limited, and families may face added challenges accessing consistent support. Volunteers help bridge that gap.
Their service strengthens the entire community. When volunteers give their time, they help create a dependable system of support for local children. They show that even in smaller communities, people can come together in meaningful ways to make a lasting difference.

Giving Matters Too
Volunteers are essential, but volunteer time alone cannot fill a backpack. Financial support is just as important to our mission. Monetary donations allow Food Backpack for Kids to purchase the food that goes into every bag we prepare for children.
Without funding, there would be no food to pack, organize, and distribute. Every donation helps provide the resources needed to keep the program going and to continue serving children each week.
When people give financially, they help turn volunteer effort into direct support for children. Giving and volunteering work hand in hand. One provides the resources, and the other helps put those resources into action.
A Community Effort With Real Impact
National Volunteer Month is a meaningful reminder that feeding children takes a community. It takes volunteers who are willing to give their time. It takes donors who are willing to give financial support. And it takes a shared commitment to making sure local children have the food they need.
At Food Backpack for Kids, we are grateful for every person who helps make this work possible. Whether through volunteering, donating, or sharing our mission with others, each act of support helps feed children in our community.
